Landscape and the Novel                                              Sue Love

his will give you a chance to explore how writers use landscape, light and gardens as settings, signs and symbols. We will study Thomas Hardy’s powerful novel The Woodlanders, and two novellas Elizabeth Gaskell’s intriguing Cousin Phyllis and Edith Wharton’s poignant Ethan Frome. You will need to read these before the course begins.


British Art Outside London (1880- -1930)

The course will cover the Glasgow Boys, the Scottish Colourists and the Newlyn School. The Glasgow Boys 2010 exhibition has brought these painters into more prominence. The Scottish Colourists are better known but still deserve a more detailed study. The Newlyn School are not well known outside their native Cornwall and certainly merit a closer look.

The Ice Ages: God’s Great Plough         now Harry Langford

An introduction to the causes and evidence for Ice Ages in the recent geological past.  Illustrated with examples of their effects on different landscapes. The processes that glacial and inter-glacial climates generate will be investigated and illustrated with colour slides and specimens in the classroom and in the field


The Life and Times of Henry VIII                     Jean Townsend

The course will cover this turbulent and fascinating period, and concentrate on the lesser known aspects of this controversial monarch and his wives.   Jean will bring her usual blend of knowledge and humour to the subject.


Art for All                                                  now Barbara Clemence

Ed will cover a variety of media - oil, watercolour and acrylic and will take his subject matter from the unique Harlaxton surroundings as well as supplying other challenging arrangements for you to portray.


Northern Sounds                                            David Lovell Brown

This course is an exploration of the music of Scandinavian composers in the 19th and 20th centuries including Grieg (Norway), Berwald (Sweden), Sibelius (Finland),  Nielsen (Denmark) and others. Hear how these composers responded to the landscapes in which they lived.
