The 11 - 14 July 2010 Summer School
The Brontës - Dispelling the Myth Sue Love Sue is an experienced WEA lecturer and a newcomer to Harlaxton. This course will look at the work of the Brontë sisters and in particular, Agnes Gray, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. If you sign up for this course, it will be expected that you have read these novels before you come to Harlaxton.
The course gives a general history of French art from the 15th Century to the Barbizon School and will look in detail at the work of de La Tour, Poussin, Claude, Lorraine, Chardin and the Brabizon School. It will also cover Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Ingres, Delacroix and Gericault.
An introduction to the Jurassic World with particular attention to the variety of life and environments represented in the British Geological Record. Case studies from Dorset to Yorkshire will be illustrated with fossil, mineral and rock specimens, maps and colour slides. There will be a half days excursion to localities including a quarry.
The course will cover the conception of this new royal house and explore the lines of complex and sometimes dysfunctional personalities who bore its name. Jean will bring her usual blend of knowledge and humour to the subject.
Based on the success of the 2009 Gardening Course, this course will feature talks on the gardens to be visited and gardening related subjects. There will be visits to Donnington Hall Gardens, the Japanese Gardens near Newark and Stuart Dixon’s restored 18th Century garden at Hebb’s Farmhouse.
Pogroms in Russia, Nazism in Germany - many fled to safety in the New World - among them highly gifted musicians who had a profound influence upon American music. This course will investigate the music of several notable composers including Korngold, Gershwin, Berlin and Kurt Weil. There is much to explore including concert works, theatre and film music, opera and songs. The emphasis is on enjoyment.
